It is a fact that the best coffee shops are a well kept secret. Ed's Cake & Coffee House, however, won't remain a secret for long.
Located in a quiet Mt Wellington neighbourhood, it had a phenimenal opening day on September 21, when it was besieged by customers from dawn till dusk - until the place ran out of food.
"People didn't just come for cakes, pies and coffee; they stopped to congratulate me for finally being able to come to a great neighbourhood coffee house," Edmund Koh, the owner says.
Edmund has been a New Zealand Pastry Chef for more than 20 years. Such success is rarely accidental. Ed's Coffee House is the result of a lot of passion and hard work. It provides an exciting new experience, with eye-pleasing decor, lounge seating and bar stools.
But wait until you tuck into those gorgeous pies, splendid cakes, beautifully presented pastries, and smooth Matakana Coffee. Long after you leave the place, the taste of sumptuous food lingers on the palate and in your memory, leaving you with a sense of satisfaction. Indeed, it is the kind of wholesome food you could take home - without guilt - and surprise your family for dinner.
Clearly, Edmund hasn't forgotten the dishes his mother and grandmother prepared when he was a boy. For him baking is a skill grown our of childhood matured over time and ripened to a passion. As a specialist in Wedding cakes, Edmund's creativity can be seen in the gussied up food in the cabinet. He credits not just his family but also his teachers for honing his skills as a pastry chef. Skills which garnered him the New Zealand Pastry Chef of the Year and other awards.
Another side of the business is catering for any and every occasion. There can only be one complaint: Ed, what took you so long?

It was a last minute addition to serve tea and cakes after the wedding service; our daughter wanted to organise her wedding and it took time for the realisation that not having tea, left the service at something of a loose end. Through our friend Peggy we found Edmund and the family did a sampling and decided to go ahead with him. We suspected that his prices were not the cheapest but he had won previous pastry championship awards, the tasting went well and so for us service won over cost. We really did need to cap the morning service with something memorable. And that is what happened.
Everyone commented on the expectional standard of the tea and cakes that morning. Edmund's art was evident in the fine pastry carrots on the carrot cakes but ultimately in the taste.
I particularly liked his moist lemon cake followed closely by the carrot cake though the mince pies were apparently a sell out. Moreover, Edmund's service was exemplary. He had sorted the various cakes and timed their release so that those that stayed a little longer for the church photo session did not miss out. The organic coffee was great and the decorations tied into the brides maids purple dress colour. There are the sorts of details that are known to professionals.
We would strongly recommend Ed's service and his staff for any catering event.

We have 2 standard size cakes. Our 6” starts from $25 and 9” starts from $45. Our next sizes up from here are 11” and 12” square. If you require a larger or custom size cake, get in touch and we will be happy to provide a quote. For more information please see our Cakes page.
We can make any flavour you like. Our most popular flavour is Ed's signature Chocolate Fudge. Have a look at our Cakes page for other flavours.
Best thing is not to leave your cake till the last minute. However, we will try our best to work our magic and make your cake if it is possible. At least 2 days notice is needed for a fancy decoration cake. 1 day for standard size cakes depending if we have stock, as all our cakes are baked fresh to order. Give us a ring and ask what we can do.
Best thing to do is to email or bring in images of cakes you like. From here we will provide a quote for the cake based on the image you have supplied.
Prices of a Wedding Cake depends on flavour and how complex and fancy the decorations. As a guide line our 2-tier starts from $300 + decoration and 3-tier starts from $550 + decoration.

Chef Ed has specialised in making wedding cakes for the past 18 years. His experience range from Auckland's top five-star hotel to numberous large event catering companies. Apart from his fine-tune skill sets he is also a perfectionist at heart.
Our number one advice is not to leave your wedding cake till the last minute. Best to book 3 months in advance to secure your date. However, we will try our best to work our magic and make your cake if it is possible and achievable. Surcharge may apply to last minute orders.
Our items are designed as cocktail sizes, plattered and ready to serve therefore they fantastic for any occasion. Whether it be morning tea, business lunch, work meetings, birthday parties or even your special wedding day.
Generally we require 24 hours notice for catering; however if you require food at shorter notice we will always do our very best to cater for you. Please note some items will not be available on short notice and surcharge may also apply.

We do not accept Credit Cards - Apologies for the inconvenience. We accept Eftpos and Cash for any shop sales, Birthday and Wedding Cakes. For Catering we will prepare an invoice for Direct Bank Deposit or Cheque issued out to Ed's Cake.
We usually require a 50% deposit for large Birthday Cakes, Wedding Cakes and Catering.
